A sentimental history of the South that no longer exists, told through a narrative illustrated by vintage photographs and a thousand memories. An illustrated journey in search of a lost world, followed by an essay on photography. Not artistic photographs or images of historical events, but souvenir photographs – predominantly amateur, private and personal – drawn from family albums and village memories.
Through text and images, Marcello Veneziani recounts a fabulous world, an era that is no longer our own: the South of peasant civilisation and large families, the devout and superstitious South, archaic and ‘hard-working’, the South of processions, weddings, funerals, mourning, country life, life by the sea, social clubs, barbers’ shops or the village stroll. The communal South, poor and harsh but rich in humanity. Worlds that have been erased, or are on the verge of disappearing, whose memory and last traces we seek to preserve, before night falls or oblivion sets in.
